In my opinion, the Reference 54 alto is comparable to a Mark VI in many ways. Sound and feel is very similar. Plus the manufacturing techniques used in the modern era tend to be much more predictable than in the years of Mark VI production.

My brother retired last year, and I volunteered to sell his horn on his behalf. Had I known that he was going to dispose of his sax for which he was the original owner, I would not have purchased the Ref 54 that I now play.

Another advantage to the Ref 54's is that they are relatively unplayed. Many Mark VI's have been played so much that parts are wearing down and some slop may have been introduced after all those years of play. Most Ref 54's should still be pretty tight.

As far as how to sell, there is always Craigslist, local classified ads, word of mouth to local band directors, and bulletin board ads that can be placed at music stores, and the music department of your local university music department.

I think $4700 is a reasonable place to start, especially in mint condition, but you may need to take less if you want a quick sale.
