If you want to play around with your Galaxy Note’s settings, you are going to need to root it and install a custom recovery. In this post, we’re going to show you how to root and install CWM Recovery Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N700.

Before we begin, make sure of the following:
- You have charged your battery to over 60 percent.
- You have backed up all your important messages, contacts and call logs.
Note: The methods needed to flash custom recoveries, ROMs and to root your phone can result in bricking your device. Rooting Samsung Galaxy Note on Android ICS / JB:
- First, go to your Galaxy Note’s Settings > About Phone.
- Check what your phone’s Android version is, whether it is Android IceCream Sandwich (4.0.x) or Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2).
- Check your phone’s Kernal version.
- Download the .zip file for your phone’s kernel version here. Place the file on the phone’s external sd card.
- Turn off the phone by either long pressing the power button or pulling off the battery. Wait for about 30 seconds. Now turn it on by pressing and holding down the Volume Up + Home + Power Keys.
- The phone should now boot into the recovery mode. While in recovery mode, you can move between options by using the volume up and down keys. To make selections, you can use the power key.
- Select: install update from external sd card.
- Choose the downloaded .zip file and select yes.
- The installation of the custom recovery should begin now and your phone will be rooted as well.
If you want to enter the custom recovery repeat the step 5.
If you want to check that you have root access, go to your apps menu and see if you have the SuperSu app. You can check by installing the Root Checker App from the Google play store.
Rooting the phone on Android Gingerbread:
NOTE: It is not possible to root a Samsung Galaxy Note running on Android 2.3.x Gingerbread, therefore; you need to flash a pre-rooted ROM. You can do so by following the steps explained
- First download the following:
- Download and Unzip Odin for PC.
- Download & InstallSamsung USB Drivers.
- Download and unzip Pre-Rooted Gingerbread ROM here
- OpenOdin
- Put phone in download mode, by turning off your phone either by pulling out the battery for around 30 seconds or long pressing the power button. Turn it back on by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power Keys.
- Attach the phone to a computer using the original USB cable.
- The ID:COM port at the top left of Odin should turn either blue or yellow now
- Select PDA tab and select downloaded-rooted ROM
- Make sure the options selected in ODINshould be the same as shown below.
- Click on ”Start” and the installation process will begin. When it is done, your phone should restart and you should have pre-rooted ROM installed with CWM Recovery Samsung Galaxy Note
Why would you want to root your phone? Because it will give you complete access to all the data which would otherwise be locked by manufacturers. Rooting will remove factory restrictions and allow you to make changes in both the internal and operating systems. It will allow you to install apps that can enhance your devices performance and upgrade your battery life. You will be able to remove built-in apps or programs and install apps which need root access.
NOTE: If you install an OTA update, the root access will be wiped. You will either have to root your device again, or you can install OTA Rootkeeper App. This app can be found on the Google Play Store. It creates a backup of your root and will restore it after any OTA updates.

So last month we published a guide on how to load a custom ROM onto your phone.
That situation has changed and all of the major UK networks have now upgraded their S2s to the latest iteration of Google's software. That means you can legitimately get a taste of the new ice-cool OS without having to void your warranty by flashing firmware.
If you're one of the many impatient people who have already installed a custom 4.0 ROM to your phone, then you may well be sat there wondering how you can get your beloved blower back on the straight and narrow with the officially sanctioned update. Fear not, read on and you'll learn how, plus a whole lot more besides.
Getting started
First up, you'll need to make sure that you have the latest Samsung drivers installed on your PC, otherwise your phone won't be recognised. Samsung's site has the stuff you need, so point your browser there if you're unsure.
Next up is Odin, which is the piece of software that handles the magical process of flashing firmware to your phone. Download Odin here.
Finally, you'll want the firmware you wish to flash. Unless you're especially smitten with the additional bloatware your particular network operator sees fit to install on its Galaxy S2s, you're best off going with the unbranded UK 4.0.3 firmware, which can be downloaded from here. If you'd rather use a carrier-branded offering, have a look around this thread to find the one you're after.
Restoring stock firmware to your phone
Before you attempt to do any of the steps outlined below, make sure that Samsung's Kies software is not running on your machine. Kies has an unfortunate tendency to cause problems when Odin is attempting to communicate with your device, so ensure it is either disabled or uninstalled entirely. It's also worth noting that following the steps outlined below could wipe your handset, so be sure to back up anything you don't want to lose, just in case.
Once you've got everything set up correctly, completely switch off your phone. Once it's off, press the volume down button, home button and power button together. Use the volume up key to place the phone in Download Mode and you're ready to flash that lovely stock firmware to your device. Connect your phone to your computer using a standard micro-USB cable. If you get a message informing you that your phone hasn't been installed correctly, you'll need to grab those Samsung drivers we alluded to earlier.
Open up Odin and click the 'PDA' button. Find the official 4.0.3 firmware you downloaded to your computer moments previously and select it. Note that this file has been compressed, so you may need to install WinRAR to extract it before loading into Odin. WinRAR is available as a free trial and can be downloaded here. Once installed, you should be able to extract the firmware by right-clicking it and selecting the WinRAR option from the menu. Having selected your extracted firmware in Odin, ensure that only the 'Auto Reboot' and 'F. Reset Time' boxes are ticked in Odin's user interface, then click start.

Odin will work its magic and flash the official firmware to your device. Once it's finished, your phone will reboot automatically, and you'll be the proud owner of a Galaxy S2 with stock (and all-above-board) Ice Cream Sandwich firmware.
