He said it was a pre serial number rifle so it was probably made in the 60s. I couldn't believe someone didn't buy it on saturday and the dealer said that a lot of guys said they would be back for it later. I am glad I got it first! Features the early Marlin trademarks like the golden trigger and the bullseye in the stock. Someone had posted a Marlin serial number on this site at one time and I copied it. The manufacture date with this serial number is 1970. I also went into the gun auctions on the net and the prices ranged from 137.00 (that auction closed) all the way up to a little over 300.00.

Marlin 99m1 Serial Number Lookup
I had come into my possession a Marlin Model 49, well at least the Barrels says it is a Model 49 and it looks like a Model 49, semi-auto tube fed 22, with a 2 piece stock. However the serial number is stranger. SN# 6692656XX and there are a couple of things wrong with that. First, if the first 2 digits denotes the year, then this must be a prototype as the Model 49 did not appear until 1968 and ended in 1971. Second, it was suggested that the first '6' was actually a 'G' but five different people have looked at the thing under a lighted magnifier and all agree it is a '6'. Even Marlin guy was stumped. Any hints or suggestions from the forum?
